Author Interview: Zen Cooper by Angelia Menchan

by Notorious Spinks on 02.02.2011

Thanks for joining me as I interview author Angelia Menchan. Her new book, ZEN COOPER: WOMAN-CHILD: GHETTO GENIUS is in stores now.

ZEN COOPER is known for being, different, smart, a genius even. She also lives in a precarious situation, with a mother she adores but who she isn’t sure loves her. However, her faith, books, photography and guardian angel, named ‘Crazy Charlie’ are enough to keep her smiling. But, there is so much for her to know and discover and nothing and no one will be able to stop the child from becoming a woman, and the genius from feeling the pain life offers. Zen Cooper: Woman-Child: Ghetto Genius offers a vivid, real glimpse into the life of a young, growing woman who pulses with courage and strength in the face of odds and though at times down, is never out.

Tell us about Angelia Menchan?

Angelia Menchan is a wife, mother, mentor, nana and someone who believes without a doubt that we get back ten-fold from the universe, that which we provide. This has absolutely nothing to do with money or riches, but simply that what you do without expectation is BLESSED back to you.

When did you love for writing begin?

I have always loved writing, I received my first journal in late elementary school and have been jotting down notes and thoughts ever since. However, actually I have always written stories in my head that later made their way to print.

How did you create Zen Cooper?

Zen was a concept in my mind about a young woman with huge odds against her who manages to navigate life extremely well in spite of that. Mostly my characters are created within the writing.

How long did it take you to write this book?

I am going to say a year. I wrote a short story in December of 2009, it was published in the anthology Women Writes, I did not write any more of the story until September 2010 and completed it December 2010. So in actuality it took four months, but was a year from conception to birth.

When you’re attacked by writer’s block what do you do?

I cannot say that I have ever had writer’s block. Sometimes I try to control the story and when it doesnt go the way I wish, I will sit it aside, but usually the characters take over any way. Right now I am going throw a slow season of writing, but it isnt writer’s block, because the stories are there, I am simply choosing to write slower.

If you could choose an author as a mentor who would it be?

I would have to say James Baldwin, I loved his blood, sweat and tears, unapologetic way of telling stories.

Who is your favorite author and what do you like most about their work?

Again, I would have to say James Baldwin, I loved how full his female characters were and how he left no flaws unturned.

What do you love doing when you’re not writing?

I am an avid reader, I love my family time and I love, love, love mentoring.

What’s next for Angelia Menchan?

I am working on a couple of things but I am being careful in not committing myself to any deadlines or time frames.

Any last thoughts or comments?

Thanks for having me and always supporting my work.
