I’m Back…Book Challenges & All

by Notorious Spinks on 02.21.2011

Hey Spinkys!

I’ve been slow to get back in the book reading grooving but you know reading is my first love.  That means I can’t stay out-of-pocket for too long.  First I need to introduce my book challenges.  Last year I got started good but fell off due to my course work stressing me out.  This semester I only have one class, photojournalism, and all is good.  That means in May 2011 I’ll be officially a college graduate!  [insert fireworks here as I do the dougie]

So here are my 2011 challenges.  My goal is to read as many books in my TBR pile that meet the guidelines for challenges.

Quirky Brown Reading Challenge hosted by BrownGirl Speaks

Deets:

uncharacteristic, atypical, offbeat, quirky…

This challenge was inspired by a blog post on New Model Minority. The post talked about the hyper-marginalization of Black fiction and included a short but intriguing list of books. That list, or at least the authors on it, were begging to be part of a reading challenge. So, I bring you the Quirky Brown Reading Challenge. This challenge is more than about finishing a certain number of books, but about challenging the overly subscribed to depictions of the so-called “Black experience”. I hope participants also discover some of our lesser known contributions to American literature.

Dates: Jan.1 – Dec. 31, 2011

Level IV:  5+ books

PoC Reading Challenge

Deets:

This challenge is to encourage readers to read books by authors of color.

Dates: Jan.1 – Dec. 31, 2011

Level 5: 16-25 books

Middle East Reading Challenge hosted by Helen

Deets:

I hope we are all going to be exposed to interesting new topics, authors, and books over the next year. I am not Muslim, not Arab, and am not from the Middle East. However, over the past few years the Middle East has grown to play a greater role in the world, and, unfortunately, the information we hear is mostly negative. I hope that by reading books about this region we’ll all gain a better understanding of the people and culture.

Dates: Aug.1 – July 31, 2011

Chunkster Reading Challenge

Deets:

Must read books 450 pages or more.

Dates: Feb. 1, 2011 – Jan. 31, 2012

Level 1: The Chubby Chunkster – 4 Chunksters

Library Challenge

Deets:

The goal is to read 12, 25, 50, or 100 books from your local library.
